Begin your walk from the Tronoh Dredge Hole car park off Feathertop Track and head either way around this man-made lake.
The Tronoh Dredge Hole was created by the Tronoh Dredge, one of the world’s largest electric-powered mechanical dredges. There are several walking tracks around the Tronoh Dredge that weave through native bush and ferns, along the Ovens River, and around the dredge holes. These tracks are signposted and provide further information about the historical sites along the trails.
The Tronoh Dredge Hole is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and kayaking. It also features a number of lovely walking trails, including one that circles the lake for about 1.5km. The lake’s idyllic natural setting conceals what was once the largest gold mining dredge operation in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a peaceful place for a picnic and has tables and a pit toilet. To find it, turn onto Feathertop Track and after 550m, turn right onto the dirt road and keep left.
