Sydney pretty much has it all. A thriving CBD, tons of incredible cafes and restaurants, plentiful parks, harbour walks….oh, and beaches galore. But while Sydney’s beaches are some of the most famous in the world, a lot of them are reserved for people rather than pets. Fortunately there are still some fantastic dog beach options out there – you just need to know where to find them!

We’ve pulled together our favourite Sydney pet friendly beaches that welcome families and fur babies alike. Not only that, we’ve also provided our top three beaches outside of Sydney – perfect pitstop for a summer road trip.

While you’re at it? Check out our tips for the ultimate doggie beach day .

Greenhills Beach, Cronulla

Greenhills earns the title of Sydney’s only ocean-fronting beach. It’s a gorgeous area and great for swimming. Greenhills is off-leash before 10am and after 4pm. You can find it to the north of Wanda Beach, with a stroll through a lovely on-leash reserve. Just keep in mind that your fur-babe isn’t allowed on the beach in the middle of the day, so early morning and late afternoon dips are definitely where it’s at. There’s great coffee stops nearby and acai bowls aplenty.

Sirius Cove, Mosman

This is a favourite amongst city pet parents and perfect for a fun day out with friends and family. Sirius Cove is off-leash all day weekdays, while weekends are restricted to pre-9am and post-4pm. It’s located just west of Taronga Zoo, Mosman in Sydney’s lower north shore. At high tide, both you and Fido can have a frolic – the water is calm and great for paddling amongst the yachts. The quiet bay also boasts BBQs, picnic tables, a playground and plentiful shade. Feeling like a stroll post-swim? It’s also the starting post for a coastal walk to Bradley’s Head.

Glebe Foreshore Parks, Glebe

You might not expect to find a dog-friendly haven right in the heart of Glebe, but the suburb has come leaps and bounds thanks to some council TLC. The 24/7 off-leash park is next to Blackwattle Bay. Your fur baby can easily access the water for a clean, safe swim. There’s also pathways for pedestrians and cyclists to reach the waterside.

Rowlands Reserve, Bayview

Easily one of Sydney’s most popular dog-friendly destinations, Rowland Reserve is a favourite amongst seasoned pet-parents. Constantly off-leash, it’s got water access to Pittwater and is shallow and safe. Plus, once they’re done splashing about, you can both enjoy a run around in the park, stroll onto the sand split or even head over to Newport Pub. Sometimes, you’ll find a mobile dog-wash and coffee cart too. Don’t forget sun protection here, as there’s not a lot of shade. Brush up on how to keep your dog cool and content in the heat of summer here.

Spit Reserve, Mosman

This bayside park is a charming start to the iconic Spit to Manly walk. The area is off-leash all day Monday-Friday, while weekends are limited to early morning and afternoon (which means less sun exposure). Whether you’re up for a bush-walk or a casual romp in the water, this is a lovely choice for people and pets alike. If you continue along to Pearl Bay Reserve, you’ll find plenty of shade, or you can make a day off it by heading towards Manly and enjoying the dog-friendly beaches en route.

PLUS, three of our favourite pet-friendly beaches out of Sydney:

North Shelley Beach, Central Coast

This is an amazing option for the whole family. Boasting super easy access and parking, it’s appropriate for human babes and fur babes alike. There’s room to catch some great surf, but the beach is also safe for general swimming. With a long stretch of sand and a simple stroll across the neighbouring Toowoon Bay, you can get some exercise in after your swim or opt for the local kiosk for a coffee or ice cream. It’s always off-leash, making it a no-brainer if you’re holidaying in the area.

Silver Beach, Kurnell

Super close to Greenhills Beach in Cronulla, Silver Beach is dog-friendly all day long Monday-Friday (with weekend access 4pm-9am). You won’t have to fight intense crowds to enjoy your day, parking is straightforward and there’s even BBQ facilities available. Enjoy shallow, low tides and calm surf, as well as awesome city views towards Botany Bay. The off-leash swimming area is at the western end of the beach. Just be aware that Silver Beach attracts kite-surfers, which may pose too much temptation if your dog loves a good pursuit/chase.

Pearl Beach

An easy drive from Sydney, this gem has unrestricted parking and surprisingly few people on a daily basis. The far north end of the beach is dog-friendly and it’s nothing but serenity and white sand! Be wary of smaller dogs when the wind picks up, as it can get intense swell. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, there are plenty of cafes and eateries nearby.

It’s a pity that there are so few “fur child” friendly places. Without us, the pet industry wouldn’t exist. Just think, for a moment, how many millions of $$$ this industry receives each year, but still the public restricts us from taking our pets to so many places. Not much in the way of support, either, from the pet supplies industry who rely on us so heavily.
